The jute plant requires specific growing conditions and soil, needing to be grown in warm, humid climates that have annual monsoon seasons.

The jute fiber comes from the stem and outer skin of the jute plant, which grows in tall, single stems. The plant needs to grow for about four to six months, then harvesting begins. Harvest typically takes place after the plant has flowered.

After the jute plant has been harvested, the stalks are soaked in water for approximately 20 days. This helps the fibers to separate from the stalk. After that, the long and shiny fibers can be separated from the stalk and are combed into long strings. The fibers are then spun into yarn on looms.

And this all-natural process pays off in the end.

It’s a Renewable Resource

Jute is a type of plant that grows quickly and can be harvested every year, making it a sustainable alternative to plastic.

It’s Biodegradable

Natural burlap will also naturally decompose over time. This means it will not contribute to plastic pollution and can be disposed of without harming the environment.

It’s a Low Impact Crop

Jute is typically produced without fertilizer and pesticides, which lessens its environmental impact.

It’s Good for the Air

Jute has one of the highest carbon absorption rates of any plant. One hectare of jute can consume up to 15 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere and release about 11 tons of oxygen during the growing season – meaning it’s cleaning the air too!
